월드 와이드 웹(www: World Wide Web)은 세계 어디든지 상호 연락할 수 있고 정보를 제공한다. 지구에 이 새로운 통신수단의 등장으로 인해 역사상 최초로 전 지구적으로 개개 시민들이 단어와 소리와 그림을 저렴하고 직접적으로 집에서 교류할 수 있게 되었다.

인터넷은 인류 진보의 중요한 디딤돌을 대표하고 있으며, 앞으로 등장할 것들의 선구자이기도 하다. 벨기에 브뤼셀의 AI(인공지능)연구자 Francis Heylighen은 이 새로운 지구적 의사소통 시스템이 매일 수십억의 사람들이 정보를 더해가면서 점차 세력을 계속 높여갈 것이라고 보고 있다. Heylighen 그것은 정보가 더욱 축적될 것이고, 지구적 초유기체로 변신하면서 언젠가는 모든 인류의 문제에 대한 해결책을 제공할 수 있을 것이라고 말한다.

전문가들은 인터넷을 지구혹성의 두뇌가 자라는 것에 비교한다. 사용자들은 뉴런(신경 단위)을 나타내고, 우리의 이메일과 다른 연락망은 신경말단(nerve endings: 정보전달역할)으로서 기능하며, 하늘을 통한 전파는 신경통로가 된다고 볼 수 있다. 발아하고 있는 씨앗처럼, 이 지구적 두뇌는 계속해서 진화해갈 것이고, 일부의 사람들이 믿고 있듯이 최종적으로는 감각들을 갖고, 의식을 갖는 단계로까지 성장을 멈추지 않을 것이다.

감각들은 시스템 구성이라는 측면에서 인식 또는 의식보다는 낮은 단계이다. 이러한 의미에서, 지구의 두뇌는 이 목표에 영향을 미치는 중요한 사건들을 의식할 것이다. 의식의 이보다 더 높은 단계인, 자각은 지구의 두뇌가 자신의 기능을 숙고하는 능력을 필요로 할 것이다.

인터넷은 지구촌이라는 넓은 의미에서 천천히 자신을 자각해나가고 있다. 비록 오늘날의 알고리즘들이 WWW를 더 지능적으로 만들고는 있지만, 스스로를 모니터링 할 수 가없다. 그러나 원리적으로 미래에 그러한 능력을 부여하는데 있어서 장애는 없다.

검색엔진 연구자들은 유저들의 요구에 따라 웹페이지를 추려내는 새로운 알고리즘을 개발하고 있다. 오늘날에는 인간만이 웹페이지에서 하이퍼링크를 연결해 놓을 수 있지만, 앞으로는 검색엔진이 특정한 유저의 요구에 대해서 자동으로 링크를 걸어줄 것이다.

이 하이퍼링크는 인간의 두뇌와 놀랄만한 유사성이 있다. 뉴론들을 연결하는 시냅스는 반복 사용할수록 더 강해지고 사용이 중단되면 사라진다. 유사하게도, 지구의 두뇌 알고리즘은 인기 있는 링크는 강화시키고 반면 사용이 뜸한 링크는 사라지거나 도태시킬 것이다.

내일의 지구두뇌는 인간 마음도 업로드가 가능하도록 해줄 것인가? 현재로서 인간과 컴퓨터간의 정보교환은 마우스, 키보드 또는 목소리로만 된다. 그러나 미래학자들은 미래에는 육체적 두뇌로부터 마음을 분리해 컴퓨터 안에 그 정보를 저장하는 기술이 가능할 것이라고 믿는다.

그것은 당신이 그렇게 생각할지도 모를 미친 짓이 아니다. 하워드 휴스 의학연구소(Howard Hughes Medical Institute)의 지구상 최고의 신경학자들(neuroscientists)300명은 사람의 생각을 거의 분리해내는 단계에 왔다. 이것은 상상컨대, 생각들, 기억들, 감각들을 기계로 업로드 시킬 수 있게 해줄 것이다.

미래에는 많은 이들이 믿고 있듯이 인간의 마음을 다른 정보들처럼 처리할 수 있음으로서, 여러 가지 매체에 복사하고 저장할 수 있을 것이다. 과학자들은 우리의 생각이 수 조개의 뉴론속에 돌아다니고 있으며, 오늘날 우리들은 믿을 수 없을 정도로 복잡한 이 시스템을 해명해줄 정신의 암호체계를 갖고 있지 않음을 알고 있다.

그럼에도 불구하고, 우리가 “요술과 같은 미래”에 조금씩 더 가까워지고 있으며, 우리는 돈과 명령이 주어진다면 인류는 그 암호를 해독해낼 것을 확신한다.

The World Wide Web is a network of inter-connectivity that goes everywhere
and follows its own intelligence. The advent of this newly emerging
communication field around our planet has enabled citizens from all
lifestyles to communicate globally via words, sounds and pictures ?br> inexpensively, person-to-person, from the safety and sanctity of their own
home ?for the first time in history.

The Internet represents a major step in our evolution, and is a forerunner
of things to come. Brussels, Belgium AI researcher Francis Heylighen sees
huge growth as this new world-wide communication system continues to gain
power from billions of humans adding to its intelligence every day. It will
get smarter, Heylighen says, as it morphs into a global super-organism that
could one day provide solutions to all of humanity뭩 problems.

Experts compare the Internet to planet Earth growing a global brain. As
users, we represent the neurons; our e-mails and other postings act as
nerve endings; and electromagnetic waves through the sky become neural
pathways. Like germinating seeds, this global brain continues to evolve and
as some believe, will not stop until it finally develops feelings and
achieves consciousness.

Feelings are a lower level of awareness or consciousness of what goes on in
a system뭩 environment. In that sense, the global brain will be conscious
of important events affecting its goals. A higher level of consciousness,
self-awareness, would require that the global brain could reflect on its
own functioning. The Internet, in the wider sense of the world community is
slowly becoming aware of itself. Although today뭩 algorithms make the web
more intelligent, it cannot monitor itself. However, there is no in
principle obstacle towards implementing such a capacity in the future.

Search engine researchers are developing new algorithms that adapt web
pages to user needs. Today, only humans can place hyperlinks in web pages;
tomorrow, search engines will auto-link pages to specific user needs.

These hyperlinks bear a remarkable resemblance to the human brain. Synapses
that connect neurons become stronger with repeated use and disappear if
usage ends. Similarly, global brain뭩 algorithms will reinforce popular
links, while rarely used links will diminish and die.

Could tomorrow뭩 global brain allow uploading the human mind? At present,
information exchanged between humans and computers only occur with mouse,
keyboard or voice. However, futurists believe that one-day technology will
enable us to separate our minds from the physical brain and store its
information in a computer.

This is not as crazy as you might think. Howard Hughes Medical Institute is
rounding up 300 of the world뭩 top neuroscientists to capture human thought
at the exact moment of creation, which conceivably could enable thoughts,
memories and feelings to be 뱔ploaded?into a machine.

In the future, many believe we will treat the human mind like any other bit
of information, and copy and store it in various media. Scientists are
aware that our mind roams over trillions of neurons and today, we do not
possess the mental code to unravel this incredibly complex system.

Nevertheless, as we inch closer to our 뱈agical future? we are convinced
that, given the money and the mandate, humanity will crack that code.
